Urban Optics is the brainchild of San Luis Obispo Optometrist Dr. Dave Schultz. He opened up shop in 1990, and hasn't looked back since. Located in picturesque downtown San Luis Obispo, Urban Optics looks more like a gallery than an optometric office. The storefront displays an exclusive selection of unique eyewear, and the custom interior has won architectural awards and appeared in national publications. Dr. Dave Schultz has dedicated his optometric practice to exclusive eyewear and contact lenses for more than 30 years.
Dr. Schultz performs eye exams to check for vision problems and diseases, and prescribes eyeglasses and/or contact lenses as needed.
Dr. Schultz’s career started in 1981 when he completed the Doctor of Optometry program at State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry after earning his bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of California, Davis. He has a current therapeutic license to practice Optometry from the California State Board of Optometry.
In his nearly 40-year career, he has been named Young Optometrist of the Year by the California Optometric Association, and has served as a contact lens clinical investigator. He has also served as president of the Sacramento Valley Optometric Society and has received national recognition as Optometrist of the Year by Eyecare Business Magazine.
The Santa Barbara Independent named Dr. Schultz best optometrist for three consecutive years. Based on a local reader's poll, The New Times has recognized him as Best Doctor in San Luis Obispo County for five consecutive years. Urban Optics has also been recognized by The New Times for Best Eyewear Store more than a dozen times and most recently, for Best Costumer Service in San Luis Obispo County.
Favorite thing about Urban Optics: Working with Doc and the rest of our team. We all love what we do and have the best patients.
Inspirations: People who don't take themselves too seriously, are encouraging and positive.
Playtime: SF Giants games, the beach, going out to eat, hanging with friends and my husband and our two daughters.
Music: Arcade Fire, Bjork, The Replacements, Blonde Redhead, Neko Case, The Pixies
Movies/TV: Pride & Prejudice, Almost Famous, Royal Tenenbaums, This is Us, Dirty Dancing, music documentaries like Sonic Highway.
Favorite thing about Urban Optics: Working with a like-minded team where we all have patient care and satisfaction as our number one priority while still having fun. Not to mention the unique hand-picked selection of frames we offer.
Inspirations: My biggest inspiration is being able to improve a persons quality of life through eyewear. Fashion trends, music, my family and my friends.
Playtime: I love going to music festivals, weight lifting, social media, going to the beach, spending quality time with my loved ones and playing with my dog Vodka.
Music: I’m a house music and techno fanatic, some of my favorite artist include: Lane 8, Nora En Pure, Sultan + Shepard, Charlotte De Witte, Adam Beyer, Boris Brejcha, Kaskade, Chris Lake, Gorgon City and many more!
Movies/TV: I’m a sucker for reality tv like Selling Sunset & Selling The OC. I also like Parks & Recreation, New Girl, Elite, Euphoria, Studio Ghibli movies, Disney movies and cooking shows.
Favorite thing about Urban Optics: It's authenticity. We have fun and are like family. Lots of laughs!
Inspirations: Family, mountain air, music, the ocean, meditation
Playtime: Yoga, hiking, live music, friends and traveling
Music: Arcade Fire, Spoon, The Cure, New Order, Lorde, Naked and Famous, so hard to list them all!
Movies/TV: St. Elmo's Fire, The Outsiders, Can't Buy Me Love, Some Kind of Wonderful, Good Will Hunting, Ozark, The Killing, all the old school John Hughes movies
Favorite thing about Urban Optics: The fact that we're all a family and it never feels like "work".
Inspirations: My two kids and amazing husband.
Playtime: Good food and spending time outdoors with my family.
